EKU Graduate Says All You Need is 20 Seconds of Insane Courage
Each semester leading up to commencement, graduating seniors from the College of Business and Technology (CBT) are encouraged to apply for the honor of being the student commencement speaker on behalf of the college. Because there were so many outstanding applicants this fall, the College of Business and Technology would like to showcase a few of these students and their EKU experiences.
Three and half years ago, Haley Varney was attending her sister's commencement ceremony here at EKU. Although she was proud of her sister's accomplishments, Haley had no intention of ever becoming a 'Colonel.' Not for any other reason than Haley wanted to make her own path which did not include following in her sister's shoes by attending the same university. Luckily, fate intervene with a flip of a quarter three out of five times to wear the color maroon and become a beloved Colonel! Now, Haley says that EKU has been her home away from home and she will miss the home-like environment created by the faculty and students within the Department of Agriculture.
Haley's tenure at EKU has been filled with a variety of on and off-campus activities (i.e. EKU Agriculture Ambassador, EKU Agribusiness Club of NAMA Founder & President, Collegiate Farm Bureau Vice President/President, Delta Tau Alpha National Agriculture Honor Society Treasurer, COVID-19 Cares Ambassador, Baptist Campus Ministries, Intramural Volleyball, KFB Young Farmers Member, KFB Women in Agriculture Member).
When asked what message she would like to share with others, Haley explained her love for the movie, "We Bought a Zoo," staring Matt Damon. She said her favorite quote to live by came from the movie, "You know, sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage, just literally 20 seconds of embarrassing bravery, and I promise you something great will come of it." Haley encourages all graduates and prospective students to be brave, courageous, and adventurous, even if that means for only 20 seconds!"
Haley Varney will graduate in May with a B.S. in Agriculture with an emphasis in Agribusiness Management along with an A.A.S. in Technical Agriculture. Varney said that she chose Agriculture because she wanted to make a difference and stand up for farmers by being their voice. Following graduation, Varney plans to work directly in the field of Agriculture.
Congratulations, Haley Varney!
