EKU among Partners for Southeastern Kentucky Promise Zone Initiative

Eastern Kentucky University is among three higher education partners for the Southeastern Kentucky Promise Zone initiative announced recently by the White House.

According to the White House, key strategies involving EKU, the University of Kentucky, Berea College and the Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation and other local governmental units and agencies include:

Business and Technology major Cecile Chevillard has been named OVC Indoor Track Athlete of the Week. A sophomore from Paris, France, Chevillard was also named the adidas OVC Co-Female Indoor Track Athlete of the Week.

EKU Accounting Students Provide Free Income Tax Preparation Assistance

An Eastern Kentucky University accounting class is partnering with the Central Kentucky Economic Empowerment Project and Kentucky River Foothills Community Action Agency to offer basic income tax preparation for those making $52,000 a year or less.

PR Senior Spearheads Livingston Trail Towns Project

Livingston Mayor Jason Medley announced today a partnership between the Rockcastle County community and both AT&T and Eastern Kentucky University to develop a marketing and public relations campaign in support of Livingston’s Trail Town designation.  The announcement took place at the Livingston Trail Town Visitors Center.

For those with the job title of “CTO” on their business cards, the “T” typically stands for technology. In Heather Howell’s case, it stands for tea. She is the chief tea officer, and one of four owners, of Rooibee Red Tea.

Scholar Athlete: Devin Borders

Devin Borders

Marketing major Devin Borders was recently named to the third-annual College Sports Journal Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) All-Freshman team. Borders was one of just six Ohio Valley Conference players to make the 62-player list.

Borders, a Colonel Scholar and freshman from Fort Walton Beach, Fl., was earlier named the OVC Freshman of the Year.

Matt Hall wins 2014 Schulte Scholarship

Congratulations to BEM senior Matt Hall, who has received the Chris Schulte Memorial Scholarship for Spring 2014. The scholarship includes an internship with Hammond Communications Group in Lexington, KY. 

EKU Alum Sam Champion to Anchor New Show on The Weather Channel

EKU graduate Sam Champion is taking his talents to The Weather Channel.

Champion, who earned a bachelor’s degree in broadcast news in 1983, will anchor the network’s new flagship morning show, set to debut in March. Based at The Weather Channel’s headquarters in Atlanta, Champion will also assume managing editor responsibilities at the network.

Alan Long named to EKU Board of Regents

The Eastern Kentucky University Board of Regents, meeting in regular session on Monday, Jan. 13, welcomed two new members and elected officers.

The Board’s newest members are Alan Long, CPA and managing partner of Baldwin CPAs, PLLC, in Richmond; and Holly Wiedemann, Wilmore, an architect, developer and founder of AU Associates in Lexington.
